Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National park located in south western Uganda shelters half of the world’s total gorilla population. Te park shelters over 450 mountain gorillas which live in 20 families also called gorilla groups. They include Mubare, Habinyanja, Kyalguliro, Mishaya, Kutu, Bushaho, Kahungye, Oruzogo, Rwigi, Nkuringo, Katwe and Christmas.

Bwindi Forest Park is also a center for the experimental gorilla habituation experience in which travelers take part in training and taming wild gorillas making them ready fore trekking.  The experience allows you to  spend four hour with gorillas at $1500 per permit. Other things to do in Bwindi Forest in addition to gorilla trekking include  Batwa community visits, Bird watching,  waterfall hiking and nature/forest walks.

On the side of Volcanoes National park, the bamboo forest park harbors the high number of gorillas in the whole of Virunga Conservation Area. 10 gorilla families namely Amahoro, Umubano, Agashya, Hirwa, Sabyinyo, Karisismbi, Pablo and Susa A among others have been habituated for trekking in Volcanoes Park.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up & transfer to Volcanoes National park
Upon your arrival at Kigali international airport, our driver-guide will pick you up and drive northwestwards through Kigali city to Volcanoes National park. The park is home to 10 gorilla families habituated for trekking. Dinner and overnight stay at Mountain gorilla View Lodge/ Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge

Day 2: 1st gorilla trekking & transfer to Bwindi Forest
Wake up very early, have breakfast and with your packed lunch transfer to kinigi ark headquarters for briefing about the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. Hiking to trek gorilla starts at 8:00 am, taking as short as 30 minutes of several hours depending on where your allocated gorilla family will be located that day.

You will be allowed to Spend an hour with gorillas, observe their human-like characters, take photos and have fun with your close relatives. Thereafter, hike back and embark on a drive to Bwindi Forest National park in Uganda. Dinner and overnight stay at Gorilla Safari Lodge/ Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge/ Gorilla Valley Lodge

Day 3: 2nd gorilla trekking & Batwa community visits
After a morning cup o coffee, get your packed lunch and transfer to the respective park headquarters for registration and briefing about the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. You will be put in groups of eight and allocated a gorilla family. At 8:00 am, start off a hike into the jungle forest in search of the gorillas. The hike is strenuous but the magical feeling of looking into the brown eyes of a silver back gorilla is worth the effort of hiking.

Spend an hour with gorillas, take pictures, admire their social behaviors and enjoy this magical encounter. Hike back to meet your diver guide and if time allows visit Batwa pygmies for a cultural performance. Dinner and overnight stay at Gorilla Safari Lodge/ Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge/ Gorilla Valley Lodge

Day 4: Transfer to Kigali
After breakfast, check out and drive crossing to Rwanda for your connecting flight at Kigali International Airport.

Distance & Drive Time to  Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

The distance from Kampala to Bwindi Forest is 473.9 kilometers which takes roughly 9 to 9 hours of  driving via Masaka Mbarara ad Kabale route. This drive normally  comprise of several stops at the equator and road side markets where travelers refresh ad buy fresh fruits from the gardens.

Alternatively, you can board a chattered flight from Kajjansi airstrip in Entebbe to Kihihi airstrip close to the Park. The fight takes roughly 45 minutes saving the long hours of driving.

If you are coming from Kigali Rwanda, the distance from Kigali to Bwindi forest is roughly 171. kilometers which is rough 5 hours of driving and an extra hour of immigration at the border. Connecting from kigali is therefore the easiest way to Bwindi Forest. However, driving from Kampala/Entebbe to Bwindi offers you  the best pre gorilla trekking experience.
